Children at St Botolph’s will experience a high quality Design and Technology education which will enable them to become resourceful, innovative and enterprising. They will be able to draw on subjects such as maths, science, computing and art to design and make products to solve real and relevant problems in a variety of contexts. The children will develop an understanding of the impact of design and technology on daily life and develop a rich knowledge base through the evaluation of past and present innovations.
The aim of our Design technology curriculum at St Botolph’s is to ensure all children:
- Experience a carefully considered and mapped Design Technology curriculum sequence.
- Are exposed to a wide range of inspiring and engaging designs and designers,
- Are enabled to design, make and evaluate designs. .
Implementation
At St Botolphs we teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression, this ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. The journey begins in the early years, where the bedrock for all subsequent learning is laid. All teaching of DT follows the design, make and evaluate cycle. The design process is rooted in real life, relevant contexts to give meaning to the children’s learning. While making, children are given a choice of a range of tools and materials, they evaluate their own products against a set design criteria and each of the steps is built on technical knowledge and vocabulary.
Our Design Technology teaching ensures:
- The children are taught the national curriculum through inspiring, relevant and immersive topics
- The teaching of Design Technology encourages discussion and focuses on the process of design, make and evaluate, rather than the outcome.
- New knowledge and learning is related to prior knowledge and learning; connecting the children’s experiences to form a rich knowledge web.
Impact

- Recognise the impact of design and technology on their lives.
