Intent

Our Physical Education (P.E) curriculum at St Botolph’s Primary has been designed to ensure that all children will be given an opportunity to develop a lifelong interest in sport, fitness and P.E. We believe that P.E should be an inclusive subject which helps everyone to develop their understanding of the health benefits of physical activity which will allow them to make informed decisions about healthy living in the future. As a school we believe that children’s learning should demonstrate clear progression from year to year. To achieve this in P.E, teachers use GetSet4PE planning units. We also value the expertise of an external coach that teaches some of our P.E. It is our intent to build relationships with external providers of sport to develop community links and allow children at St Botolph’s to experience extracurricular sport. It is our intent that as well as the knowledge and skills associated with P.E, children are also taught our sporting values: self-belief, honesty, passion, teamwork, respect and determination.

Implementation

P.E is taught at St Botolph’s as an area of learning in its own right as well as integrated where possible with other curriculum areas. It is taught as two sessions per week to meet the expectations of our curriculum, which is to take part in a minimum of 2 hours of P.E per week. Some of KS2 take part in swimming as one of their P.E sessions.

We teach lessons so that children:

  • Have fun and experience success in sport.
  • Have the opportunity to participate in PE at their own level of development.
  • Secure and build on a range of skills.
  • Develop good sporting attitudes.
  • Understand basic rules.
  • Experience positive competition.
  • Learn in a safe environment.
  • Have a foundation for lifelong physical activity, leaving primary school as physically active.

Impact

By the time children leave St Botolph’s, we would like children to be able to talk confidently about sporting technique, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices using the correct terminology. Children will be able to reflect on their own performance and think about how they can improve it. They will have acquired knowledge of a range of great sports and activities and understand the skills that can be developed by taking part in them. When children leave St Botolph’s, we would like them to have had the opportunity to compete in a sporting competition and represent the school. As well as leave primary school as a confident and competent swimmer.
